Just Cover Up

Summer time in the northern hemisphere means longer days and more sunshine, and warmer weather that has folks wanting to strip down and go nearly nude. But uncovering your body and your head in the summer are not just rules for Arabic-background cultures, and they never were. We bicker and argue over whether or not we should cover out of modesty, or religious duty, or as a symbol of our faith, or from government law, or out of a sense of fashion, or embarrassment at hair loss. But here's the thing: everyone should cover up.
How to protect yourself - Canadian Living: • Cover up. “Keep your T-shirt on" says Rivers. Wear loose-fitting pants and long-sleeved shirts made from closely woven material for the best protection. Wear a wide-brimmed hat. And continue to use sunscreen.
Further rules for covering and protecting your head and face include:

• Head for the shade whenever possible and cover up with clothing and a wide-brimmed hat. (Look for a brim with a dark underside to prevent sun from reflecting back up onto your face.)
• Protect lips with lip balm that has at least SPF 15, and reapply every hour.
• Protect your eyes; wear sunglasses with a UV rating of 100 per cent.
The number one choice to protect your skin from sun damage is:

1: Cover Up

About one million Americans were diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in 2005. In fact, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the disease makes up one in three cancers diagnosed in this country. Fortunately, there is plenty you can do to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun.

One of the best things you can do is cover up. The sun's rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Stay indoors during this time, or if you must be outdoors, cover up and wear sunscreen. The Skin Cancer Foundation says that hats and clothing made of dark, tightly woven materials absorb ultraviolet light better than cotton fabrics in lighter shades. Dry fabrics offer more protection than wet ones.

Formal Hijab

I've been writing some articles for my other blog, Old Fashioned Lady, about the concept of modesty in formal dress occasions. Since I haven't posted here lately, I thought I'd see what I could find for formal head coverings. There aren't many for most of us, but the Muslim ladies have this formal head covering done to an art.

Check the videos "Hijab style for a formal occasion" and "Hijab tutorial for formal occasions" on YouTube, and scan through the suggested videos on the right of the screen.

Try a Google image search for "formal wear hijab" or "formal wear headscarf." Or come up with your own Google search; I even found a few cute dress ideas by searching for prom hijab.

Many hijab bloggers have posted pretty styles, including: StylishMuslimah, The Hijablog, and "How to Hijabify Your Prom Outfit" from iHijabi. Comb through their blog pages, and try their links, as well as the hijab bloggers I have listed in the right column.

Also, look through the Modest Clothes directory, for modest formal wear that could be paired up with a stylish head scarf. I'd like to hear from others who have ideas for dressing up a headcovering, when it's necessary.

Facebook Headcovering Pages

Karen Orr has contacted me before and just again, to let us know of her small but apparently active home business for modest dresses and headcoverings. You can find her at the Modest dresses & HeadCovering Shop at Facebook. I think that if you are interested in her goods, you should send her a private message, since she doesn't have an outside website shown here.

Even on social sites like Facebook, keep your eyes open, and search where you can.

Other head covering websites with pages on Facebook include:

Have fun exploring the internet through whatever source you are able to use. But, as always, be aware of stumbling across creepy sites.

A Request for Headcovering Patterns

I keep noticing on my information feed that my pages entitled "free head scarf pattern" and "how to make a head covering" get a lot of hits.  I imagine that many people are looking for head scarf and head covering patterns, so they can make their own.

Please, if you have a pattern, send a link to me here.  Please, if you have a site where you sell your own pattern or head coverings, send a link here as well.  I intend to post another article soon with a similar title so that those looking for free or even to-buy patterns for head coverings and head scarves can find a whole variety of patterns to choose from.

Please, Readers, help a head cover-er - who may cover for whatever reason - out, and post us a link to a free headcovering pattern!  Thanks!

How to sew a Christian veil

Please, go to this lady's videos for numerous helpful and sweet videos to help you make and wear your own simple head coverings, as well as learn other sewing tips.   Her website, for more information on these headcoverings and other modest issues, is : http://www.covered4him.com/ She offers head coverings of various styles for sale as well. Because of this, she notes at her website "10-21-10 Please note: Due to my personal convictions I will not sell coverings to someone if I know they will be used for costuming purposes for Halloween. There may be cases where I wouldn't mind a costume in general as long as it is used in a Godly and respectful way...but a Halloween costume is not among them. I do not mean to offend or hurt anyone's feelings, but I am adamantly opposed to that holiday and what it stands for. I prefer that my covering sewing time be used for making coverings that are to be worn for Biblical purposes. This is obviously something that must be on your individual honor as I do not always know what a person may place their order for. It only just occurred to me that someone might wish to order for that reason and I just felt led to post this as a policy, especially as it is that time of year."

You can read her own words here: "Headcovering Testimony," By Mrs. Eleanor R. McDonie.

Etsy Headcovering Shops

Here are some neat Etsy shops that make and provide ladies' headcoverings. Click on the names of the stores to go to their sites.

These were sent to me in response to my request in the last post. If you would like to send a link to your store in the comments here, please do. There are many ladies looking for shops like yours!

Kudos to Devorah, Cam and Alana for their good works. I wonder if maybe there are others out there who are wondering if making up a store or website would be something you would like to try. What do you think?

Attention Etsy Headcovering Shops!!!

Please post to this blog article with a link to your Etsy shop, and I will post a collection of links in an article here soon. Please also let me know if I may include a sample photo of your work here, as well as any other particular information about the head coverings that you provide at your site that you would like to share with those who would otherwise not know about you.

If you know of an Etsy shop that you would recommend, write and let me know that too.

This is because I want to help people to understand and be encouraged about wearing those headcoverings. I don't get compensated usually when I share information here. Maybe I should write an e-book?

Thank you in advance!

No Burka Ban in NSW, in time for Eid

NSW Opposition won't support burqa ban : theage.com.au

The NSW opposition says it will not support a bill seeking to ban the wearing of burqas and other face veils in public, delivering a final blow to the hopes of its author, the conservative MP Fred Nile.

The Christian Democratic Party MP introduced the bill in the Legislative Council in June, even though the same bill had been voted down by the council in May.

Two weeks ago NSW Premier Kristina Keneally announced that Labor MPs would not support the proposed legislation, giving it no chance of success.

"Such a ban has no place in multicultural NSW," she said.
Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell said on Friday the coalition had also decided not to back the burqa ban, saying "there shouldn't be discrimination". . . .

Story continues at linked title above, and I'm sure there is more information on this bill within the Australian media.

Recently found website catering to the modest dressing follower of Islam: EastEssence.com

"Bringing together the finest in Islamic clothing, East Essence is proud to serve a diverse array of customers
looking for quality and style at ultimate prices. We feature a broad variety of Indian and Islamic women’s clothing that range from conventional to cutting edge silhouettes with the finest craftsmanship."

The "Hamra Hijab" (pictured above) is on sale right now for $7.99. "Reshma Hijab" (shown below) is pictured at $6.99. These pictures are directly linked from the website.

Regular shipping to UK, US and Canada, and other international rates available as well. Looks like a broad selection of Islamic and Indian styles for men, women and children, including a lot of pretty head coverings.

I came across the EastEssence link in a short article "Muslim Hijabs: More Than Meets The Eye", some of which I include below:

"Muslim hijabs are in the news, for all the wrong reasons. Traditionally, a ‘hijab' is a term that denotes the modest dress sense as laid down by Islamic law. Some times referred to as a ‘shaylah' or ‘tarhah,' a hijab is simply a square or rectangular piece of cloth used to cover the head. The word itself comes from the Arabic word hajaba, which means "to hide from the view or to conceal." Therefore, the word hijab actually denotes a ‘physical veil' covering the head and face." . . .

"According to Islamic law, modesty in clothing is a sign of respect to God and has nothing to do with male dominance over women, submissiveness or even human rights, as some of the debate over Islamic head covering rules wrongly depicts. The fact of the matter is that Muslim communities in western countries are growing in size and presence." . . .

"Modesty does not immediately equate Muslim hijabswith blandness. While conservative colours, such as green, grey, blue, and black and white, are chosen by many, there are no rules regarding style, colour or fabric. Hijabs come in a myriad colours, besides sporting embellishments such as embroidery, prints, patterns and weaves. Fabrics range from cotton to silk and wool, thus ensuring that a hijab can be worn for comfort during times of inclement weather as well." . . .

Writing about those Head Coverings

The purpose of my blog in its beginning was to share the myriad writings online about head coverings of all sorts. And there are myriad writings online. When one reads an article from a un- or ill-informed source, the underlying theme seems to be: "What's the big deal? Why do women and men choose to wear this thing on their head? Why the controversy? It's such a little thing!" Yes, it's little, but it's also a big thing. Every modern and historical culture, every religion, every fashion outlet and every health service is directly or indirectly affected by "those head coverings". How can I say that?

I have Google searching for me daily and mailing me updates of articles, blogs and other sites where the words "headcovering" or "head coverings" are used. Once a week, I get a list which has searched out the terms "veil", "veiling", and "head scarf" as well. There is always email for me, even when I don't take the time to post here. From small articles in nature walks or about dressing well in the changing season (which usually recommend head coverings strongly or even require them) to forum chats in one of any kind of setting, not necessarily religiously based, discussing the why, when, how and where to buy of head coverings. Several outlets are available for head covers focused specifically toward those who have lost their hair and have this innate desire to cover their head, whether for propriety, comfort or to ward off the weather. More and more over the past couple of years since I've started this blog, I am finding other bloggers writing about their own experience in "taking the veil" - whether as a convert in some way, or just coming to a new understanding.

With all of the information that I've seen "out there", I am still amazed at the numerous articles written that still ask, "what's the big deal?" Which is why it is important to be informed ourselves, and to be ready to give an answer to all who might ask us to explain the reason for these headcoverings. The reasons may be myriad, for sure, but we each need to understand this "little thing" that is a "big thing" after all.

Permission To Post Sales at Your Website

After nearly 2 years of having those Google linked ads linked to my blog, and having forgotten all about it, I received my first Google Ads check. Wow! So, if you click on those links on the sidebar in blue, you do help people to make a living! But if you click on the links in my articles, you're just visiting a "free" ad from me, usually something I run across in another blog or during a search.

And sometimes, I will post about a sale at a head covering sales site, if I know about it. Free ad for someone, good deal for someone else, and doesn't take me 5 minutes. I just received this email, and want to pass along the information.
